Olfactory landscapes of Bloedel Reserve

Where scent
becomes place.

Four fragrances drawn from meadow, marsh, forest, and Japanese garden, created to live in conversation with glass sculpture.

Enter the landscapes

Fragrance and glass, each making the invisible visible.

Art into Air is a collaborative exploration of place through two sensory languages. Each fragrance interprets a distinct landscape within Bloedel Reserve on Bainbridge Island. Paired with glass sculpture, the scents become atmospheric portraits of light, moisture, growth, decay, and season.

The Pollinator Meadow · Summer

Summer Grassland

Dry grass · Hay · Living green · Meadow flowers · Warm air

The path opens from woodland into a broad, sunlit field. Dry hay and living green growth mingle with daisies and small meadow flowers as warm air moves through the stems and carries their scent into open space.

Buxton Bird Marsh · Spring

Marsh Rose

Cold water · Wet vegetation · New growth · Native rose · Mineral

Cold water passes over dark, decomposing vegetation as fresh green growth rises from below. Above it drifts a delicate rose-like note, cool and translucent rather than lush, holding decay and renewal in the same breath.

Trestle Bridge & Boardwalk · Winter

Forest After Trestle

Moss · Cedar · Loam · Damp air · Shadow

Beyond the trestle, cedar, moss, damp bark, and cool loamy soil gather beneath the canopy. Light is subdued and moisture seems held within the air. The greenness is deep rather than bright: mossy, woody, loamy, and dark.

The Japanese Garden · Autumn

Katsura

Autumn sun · Yellow leaves · Dried Asian fruit · Maltol · Radiance

As the Katsura’s heart-shaped leaves turn yellow, fall, and begin to dry, they release maltol into the air. Burnt-sugar warmth, golden sunlight, dry leaves, and concentrated Asian fruit become luminous and airy.
